Interestingly Jaiku have just launched Channels which provide some of the group functionality you describe. The unique contribution it makes is the text message. I think that its mainstream use will be for broadcast out on a topic. It still needs a way to seperate blocks of users to get your message (a family group, a friends group etc). Suppose I want to know when gigs by a band are on. Or breaking news on a particular niche (irishpolitics from the irishelection guys is a good example). That's when the text message comes into its own. Having played with twitter for a radio review, I’m still happily signed up.
